Plenty of villa owners in DAMAC Hills and DAMAC Hills 2 run a small business from a spare bedroom. Most of them have some kind of backup running. Far fewer have ever tried to get a file back from it, and that is the moment a backup proves whether it was worth having.
Why is a backup that has never been restored a risk?
Because a green tick in the backup software only tells you a job finished, not that the files inside it are usable. Restore tests catch the problems that a status screen hides.
Here are the faults we see most often when we test home office backups for the first time:
- The backup covers the Desktop folder but the accounting company file lives somewhere else on the drive.
- The external drive filled up months ago and the software quietly stopped adding new versions.
- The cloud account belongs to a staff member who has since left, and nobody has the password.
- The files restore, but the accounting database will not open because it was copied while the program was running.
- The encryption key for the backup was saved only on the laptop that is now broken.
Finding these faults on a quiet afternoon is far better than finding them the day a laptop is stolen from a car or a ransomware message appears on screen.
What is different about backing up a villa home office in DAMAC Hills?
Many home offices in DAMAC Hills and DAMAC Hills 2 share a single internet line, a single router and often a single storage drive with the family. That mix changes how a backup should be planned.
In an office tower there is usually one business network and one person who owns the IT. In a villa, the work laptop sits on the same network as the children’s tablets, the smart TV and a guest’s phone. If one of those devices picks up malware, anything the work laptop can see on the network, including a shared backup drive, may be at risk. Ransomware in particular looks for connected drives and network shares to encrypt.
Villa home offices also tend to keep their only backup in the same room as the computer. A water leak, a power surge during a summer storm or a break in can take out both at once. A copy stored somewhere else, usually in the cloud, covers that.
Finally, the person running the business is often the only one who knows how the backup works. If they are travelling and a family member or assistant needs a file, there is nobody to ask. Writing the restore steps down matters more at home than it does in a larger office.
What should a DAMAC Hills home office actually back up?
Back up anything you could not rebuild in a day, and check where each of those things really lives on the computer. The second part is where most setups go wrong.
A typical list for a small business run from a villa looks like this:
- Accounting and invoicing data, including the program’s company file or database folder.
- Client documents, contracts and signed forms.
- Email, if it is stored locally in an Outlook data file rather than only on the mail server.
- Scanned trade licence, visa and tenancy paperwork for the business.
If your email is set up on a hosted business service, the mailbox itself sits on the provider’s servers. That is not the same as a backup, though. If someone deletes a folder by mistake, the deletion syncs everywhere. We often set up a separate copy of the mailbox as part of our data backup and disaster recovery service in Dubai so a bad delete can be reversed.
Which backup setup suits a villa home office?
Most home offices are well served by two copies: one local for fast restores and one in the cloud for when the villa itself has a problem. The right local option depends on how many computers you have.
| Setup | Suits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| External USB drive plus cloud | One person, one computer | The drive must be plugged in for jobs to run, and unplugged afterwards |
| Small NAS plus cloud | Two to five computers, or shared files | Needs its own login, snapshots turned on and firmware kept current |
| Cloud only | Mostly online work with little local data | Large restores depend on your internet speed at home |
If you are leaning towards a network storage box, our page on NAS backup solutions in Dubai explains how we set them up so the family network cannot reach the backup share.
How does a backup check and restore test work?
We visit the villa, look at what is being backed up today, fix any gaps and then restore real files with you watching. The whole job is agreed at a flat rate before we start.
- Short call first. You tell us which computers, which software and which files the business depends on. We agree the flat rate on the call or over WhatsApp.
- Onsite review. We check every place business data lives, including accounting folders and local email files, and compare that list against what the backup actually includes.
- Fix the gaps. We add missing folders, set the accounting software to make its own safe backup file before the main job runs, and separate the backup from the family network where needed.
- Set up the second copy. If you only have one copy, we add a cloud or offline copy with version history so older files can be recovered after a ransomware attack.
- Test restore. We pick a few files, including the accounting data, restore them to a separate folder and open each one to confirm it works.
- Write it down. You get a one page note with where the backups are, who holds the passwords and the exact steps to restore a file.
- Remote follow up. Between visits we can check backup reports remotely and repeat the test restore every few months.
The visit is handled by Muhammad Ahsan, who holds Cisco CCNP, CCNA and CCST certifications along with CompTIA A+ and Network+. You can read more about how we work on our about page.
How often should a home office test its restores?
Test a restore at least once a quarter, and again after any change to the computer, the software or the internet line. Changes are when backups most often break without anyone noticing.
Good moments to repeat the test include replacing a laptop, updating accounting software to a new version, switching email provider or moving the business into a different room in the villa with new equipment. Each of these can change where files are stored or stop the backup software from seeing a drive.
A quick monthly habit also helps. Open the backup program, check the date of the last successful job and restore one small file. It takes a few minutes and catches most problems early. If you would rather not think about it, our IT AMC in Dubai can include scheduled backup checks alongside regular support. FAQ
Do you come to villas in DAMAC Hills and DAMAC Hills 2?
Yes. We work onsite across Dubai, including villa home offices in DAMAC Hills and DAMAC Hills 2. The visit covers checking what is backed up, fixing gaps and running a test restore with you. Between visits we can help remotely, and the phone and WhatsApp line is answered around the clock.
Will a test restore overwrite my current files?
No. We restore test files into a separate folder, never over the originals. Once we have opened them and confirmed they work, the test copies can be deleted. This way your live data stays untouched while you still get proof that the backup can bring files back when you need them.
Is cloud storage like OneDrive the same as a backup?
Not quite. A sync folder copies changes everywhere, including deletions and files encrypted by ransomware. Some services keep older versions for a period, which helps, but it depends on the plan and settings. We usually pair sync with a separate backup that keeps its own version history so you have a clean copy to go back to.
Can you back up my accounting software data safely?
Yes. Copying an accounting database while the program is open can produce a file that will not open later. We set the software to create its own backup file first, then include that file in the main backup. During the test restore we open the restored copy in the program to confirm it loads properly.
What if ransomware has already hit my computer?
Disconnect the computer from the internet and the home network straight away, and do not plug in your backup drive. Then call or WhatsApp us. We will check which backup copies are still clean, clean or rebuild the affected machine and restore your files from a copy the malware never reached.
